Culture Matters DVD Series: Educating providers and staff about culturally-appropriate care to growing populations
Tuesday, September 23, 2008: 4:15 PM-6:15 PM, Minn Marriott, 6th Floor - Minnesota Room
Under a federal contract, Stratis Health (Minnesota's Quality Improvement Organization) worked with approximately 30 urban and rural clinics to educate, train, and lead physicians and other staff to provide culturally-competent care for their patients.  In the past few years Minnesota has seen a dramatic increase in the amount of new communities in the state, particularly Hmong, Somali, Hispanic/Latino, and others.  With these changes and need to better understand the cultural backgrounds and beliefs of these individuals, Stratis Health took a unique approach to educating providers about being more cuturally aware to all patients.

An pre-assessment closely tied to the CLAS standards provided a tool for clinics' need and impetus for improvement.  Additional trainings were offered to supplement learnings, along with tools and resources and an informative newsletter was provided. To provide additional training to all clinic staff, a DVD series was created dedicated to providing additional information from speakers representing the Hmong, Somali, and Hispanic/Latino community.  This Culture Matters DVD series was originally intended for clinics in the initiative, but interest has broadened to other organizations and associations who want to become more culturally aware of these growing communities.

The presentation will address issues related to the production of the DVD series, including topics addressed, target audiences, lessons learned, and projected impact.  Short sections from the DVD series will be shown to the participants.
