Communicating with the LEP Geriatric Patient- Strategies for clinicians and Medical Interpreters
Tuesday, September 23, 2008: 1:00 PM-7:30 PM, Minn Marriott, 4th Floor - Atrium
The poster presentation will address the special needs of the geriatric Limited English Patient population.
Many trained medical interprets do not receive special training dealing with this special needs population; as a matter of fact, many of the techniques learned during medical interpreter training are counter indicative when dealing with this population, such as positioning, and the use of first person.
By reaching out to the Geriatric Department at New York Presbyterian Cornell Campus, a presentation was developed to address the special needs of our patients and clinicians.
The goal of the presentation is to provide attendees with not only the blue print for a workshop that can be duplicated with their “staff” but also a specific list of strategies that can be utilized during a medical encounter with a LEP geriatric patient.
The presentation is appropriate for all clinicians dealing with geriatric patients, medical interpreter and medical interpreter trainers.
