They Bring the World
Monday, September 22, 2008: 4:15 PM-6:00 PM, Minn Marriott, 4th Floor - Deer/Elk
In preparation for Passport Health Plan’s 3rd annual Cultural and Linguistic Services conference, the Plan produced a video presentation focused on the journeys of 5 former refugees from their home countries to the Kentucky. The presentation is entitled, “They Bring the World”. This format was chosen as an innovative way to educate viewers to the process of refugee resettlement, and combat the stereotypes associated with how they live as Americans. During these very frank and provocative interviews, the former refugees detail their difficult transitions from various refugee camps to the United States, as well as explain their value as medical interpreters for new refugees. In addition, a representative from a local resettlement agency (who also happens to be a former refugee), paints a vivid picture of how the United States sanctions refugee resettlement and the impact of this process on other Americans. “They Bring the World” is a very informative and personal look at refugees as real people – and serves as a starting point for intense questions and dialogue. It is an ideal component of training for both professionals and lay people who encounter refugees in their daily lives.
