      Biographical Sketch:
      Cindy Brach is a Senior Health Policy Researcher at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. She conducts and oversees research on health literacy, cultural and linguistic competence, system design innovations, and Medicaid and SCHIP. Cindy spearheads AHRQ’s health literacy activities, coordinating AHRQ’s work in developing measures and improving the evidence base, and serves as the Agency’s CLAS expert. Cindy has served on the National Cultural Competence Conference Advisory Group since 2001. Her recent publications include, "Integrating Literacy, Culture, and Language to Improve Quality of Health Care for Diverse Populations” and "Integrating Health Literacy into Patient Safety Partnerships." Cindy’s earlier experience includes serving as a mental health policy research director, a welfare reform consultant and provider of technical assistance, a state-level administrator, and a municipal policy analyst. Cindy received her Master of Public Policy degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was also advanced to Ph.D. candidacy.

      Biographical Sketch:
      In a continuing effort to improve care quality, patient safety, and nurse satisfaction, many adult hospitals are expanding the concept of Patient and Family-Centered Care from their pediatric areas to all clinical practice sites. Terrell Smith received her undergraduate degree in Nursing at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and her graduate degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Terrell began her career as a pediatric intensive care unit nurse at The Children's Hospital of Alabama, and she has served in Brazil as a Peace Corps volunteer nurse. She held leadership positions at Children's Hospital of Alabama, and Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans. She was at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital for thirteen years with primary responsibility for the inpatient units. In 2005, Terrell was recruited into a new position to focus on the development of a patient and family-centered strategy for the adult hospital.

      Biographical Sketch:
      Cezanne Garcia, MPH, Senior Program and Resource Specialist at the Institute for Family Centered Care (IFCC), provides on-site training and technical assistance to health care organizations, oversees publications and resources development, and serves on the faculty team for seminars and conferences on how to advance the practice of patient- and family-centered care and create sustained effective partnerships with patients and families. Prior to her employment at IFCC, Cezanne was at the University of Washington Medical Center for thirteen years serving as Associate Director of Patient and Family Centered Care and Education, designing programs that strengthened patient and family centered practices by involving patients and their family members in operations, resource and program development, and clinical initiatives to optimize health outcomes. Additionally, she served in a consultant role to support the development of four health care systems’ patient and family education programs: Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Her career experience as health planner and leadership development faculty brings a systems perspective to her consultations that align internal and external constituencies to build commitment, embrace accountability and focus on collective results. Adjunct faculty member of University of Washington’s School of Public Health, Cezanne serves as lecturer and preceptor. She is Associate Editor of Sage Publication’s Health Promotion Practice Journal and is on the editorial board of Patient Education Management. Her areas of expertise focus on the interface of patient and family centered care practices, patient safety, health literacy and cultural competency to strengthen quality measures in health care systems. She has many publications; most recently a book chapter “Integrating health literacy into patient safety partnerships,” in American Hospital Association’s Engaging Patients as Safety Partners (May 2008). Proud mother of two daughters, her family has enriched her understanding of health care and how it needs to change.

      Biographical Sketch:
      Dr. Abrams is in Clinical Performance Improvement at Iowa Health System (IHS), where she leads their health literacy work and serves as faculty for resident education in quality and community pediatrics. IHS was among eight health systems nationwide identified by the 2005 AMA Hospital Recognition Project for Innovative Approaches to Patient-Centered Communication for its work in health literacy. Dr. Abrams co-chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics Health Literacy Project Advisory Committee, and served on the AMA Health Literacy and Patient Safety Work Group. She is Medical Director for Reach Out and Read - Iowa, working to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric well child care. Her interests focus on fostering interaction between diverse clinical and public health practitioners to increase awareness about and action toward using health literacy and population-based preventive and health-promoting interventions to improve the health of patients and families.

      Biographical Sketch:
      Cheri C. Wilson is a QI Team Leader in the Quality Improvement Department at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Ms. Wilson previously worked as the Patient Safety Analyst in the JHH Patient Safety Office, where she served on the Patient and Family-Centered Safety Task Force. She is the President-Elect of the Maryland Association for Healthcare Quality (MAHQ). Ms. Wilson is particularly interested in the provision of safe, quality, and culturally competent care for all patients.
