New to America: Ethnic Nepali Refugees from Bhutan

In the spring of 2008, the United States began resettling 60,000 ethnic Nepalis from the Himalayan country of Bhutan. They are being resettled in New York, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Arizona, Maryland, and other states. This session, offered by a health care profession and former refugee from Bhutan, will address the health, social service and cultural/linguistic issues posed by caring for this new refugee group.

      Biographical Sketch:
      Dr. Chhabilall T Sharma is originally from Bhutan. He had worked and lived in Bhutan as District Medical Officer for 10 years . Dr. Sharma and his family members belonged to ethnically minority group called Lothsampas. Dr. Sharma was one of the few advocates in Bhutan that was working for minority rights, because of which his life was at risk and left his country in March 1992 for refugee camps in Nepal. Dr. Sharma helped to establish the camp based medical center in all seven camps in Nepal. In 2003, Dr. Sharma moved to the US. At present, Dr. Sharma is a second year resident in Psychiatric Department in Hennepin County Medical Center, in Minneapolis, MN. Dr. Sharma has in depth- knowledge about the culture and tradition of new population; "Bhutanese Refugees from Nepal".
