Sixth National Conference on Quality Health Care for Culturally Diverse Populations: Preconference Sessions Working Effectively with Spoken Language Interpreters

Preconference A-9 Training care-givers on how to work effectively with interpreters

Working Effectively with Spoken Language Interpreters
Sunday, September 21, 2008: 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, Minn Marriott, 8th Floor - Lake Nokomis
Health and social care workers may find themselves using an interpreter when working with clients who are not English proficient. When they do so, sometimes questions arise: How can I feel more comfortable using interpreter services? How do I know if my client really understood what I was saying? Should I be saying or doing something different to ensure accuracy? Why am I uneasy when working with a family member rather than a professional interpreter?

The Minnesota Interpreting Stakeholders Group, a committee of the Upper Midwest Translators and Interpreters Association, will present a 3-hour training module that is being piloted for patient care-givers. Participants will engage in role plays, demonstrations and discussion surrounding the NCIHC Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care, the role of the interpreter, and how to work effectively with interpreters.

The class will include the role of the interpreter, main cannons of the Interpreter Code of Ethics and techniques for ensuring accuracy when working with someone who is not a professionally-trained interpreter.”

If you are looking to improve your confidence when working with an interpreter or want to be better prepared should the occasion occur, this workshop is for you.
